Tropical Salvage was founded in the 1990's and creates beautiful products and environmentally positive jobs, and as an essential part of doing business, actively contributes to conservation and biodiversity efforts in Indonesia.

Tropical Salvage uses the marketplace to drive positive change. They make their products from resources that would otherwise be lost, burnt, or left to decay. They do not cut down trees to make their furniture. They salvage wood from rivers, landslides, land conversion projects, plantation cull and volcanic lahars. Using revenues generated by sales of their products, they buy land in Indonesia to reforest it with endemic tree species in an effort to increase biodiversity and carbon storage in Indonesia’s extraordinary tropical ecosystems.

Many different species of wood are used to build Tropical Salvage products. Thorough and efficient use of natural resources is a core and guiding principle of Tropical Salvage work, so they use whatever salvageable wood they come across that can be re-purposed to craft furniture. During their twenty years in business they have used over one-hundred and fifty species of wood in production.

The clear damar finish is a natural, non-toxic resin that lasts well. The formula is simple: they mix damar resin with denatured sugar cane alcohol - 94 percent sugar cane ethanol and 6 percent methanol.
